Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
