The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
