RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.
British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
